Swallowed in Symbiosis

This piece was done as a rumination on the experiences that vulva-owners (and those who were socialized as women) have in relationship to their body. Through creating this drawing, I collaborated with a close friend on drawing their vulva in the context of nature and fostered a safe space to speak about sex-positivity, body-positivity, and empowering oneself through connection to the body. The piece features lichens, which are organisms that exist solely through the symbiosis between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. With the lichens growing on the subject’s body, I wanted to reimagine how we see the most intimate parts of ourselves: How can we begin to view our physical and sexual health in the context of symbiotic relationships in the natural world? How can we see our bodies as descendents of the natural forms around us, which hold wisdom beyond our comprehension? When we lean into these narratives, we can push beyond the narrow-minded standards of the male-gaze and confront the human body for its beauty in connection to the natural world. As I continue this practice of portraying bodies in harmony with plants, fungi, and lichens, I hope to contribute to a culture of resistance to traumatic experiences and oppressive societal standards.
